Starting Seeds in Unheated Greenhouse Using a Heat Table

Hey ya'll! Today I'm starting seeds for hardy annuals (germination temps 50-55 degrees) in a small unheated greenhouse in Zone 7a, Virginia. This greenhouse is small and made with polycarbonate panels that hold in heat fairly well. Seeds that need a winter chill period are started without bottom heat; other seeds are placed in plug trays on a custom heated shelf using moist sand and a heating cable to maintain soil warmth. You could also use one of the small greenhouses or "greenhouse" racks from shops like Tractor Supply or Harbor Freight. I've found any of these work great if you are in climate zones 6 and up; just cover the seed trays with plastic to retain moisture, and row cover (remay frost cloth) to keep them warm if it gets cold. This video also shows the type of potting soil we use, the difference between potting mix additives perlite vs. vermiculite, and appropriate soil moisture for starting seeds in trays or by soil blocking.
