“Songs of the Sawdust Trail” (the complete LP) features baritone Alan McGill along with Ralph Carmichael’s instrumental ensemble. This 1960 Sacred Records album was recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood and much of the “old fashioned” sound heard in Ralph’s arrangements can be credited to the great Joe Maphis who played guitar and mandolin on the tracks. The songs included: “Old Fashioned Meeting,” “Brighten the Corner,” “I’m Going Higher,” “We’ll Understand It Better By and By,” “The Old Account Was Settled Long Ago,” “In My Heart There Rings a Melody,” “Mansion Over the Hilltop,” “Have You Counted the Cost?”, “Shall We Gather At the River?” and “I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone.” Two additional tracks uniquely featured only Ralph’s instrumentalists (“A Ralph Carmichael Background” as the label identified them): “Old Time Religion” and “Church in the Wildwood.” The LP became one of Alan’s most popular recordings.
