Two mostly sun-filled but frigidly cold negative 20 degree weeks on the St Lawrence River photographing, or trying to photograph, equivalents. Equivalents are the OG photography term given to the images formed in our minds eye before we engage a shutter. The term was first used by Alfred Stieglitz and Minor Martin White, two pioneers of American School photography. Stieglitz wanted to paint what he felt and used clouds as subject abstracts with newly developed and released panchromatic film, whereas White, like Ansel Adams, sought to foresee a finished subject photograph before the act of engaging a shutter. Adams referred to it as visualization (largely guided by his 10 zone system) on site and White referred to it as pre-visualization...foreseeing before conceiving of a subject or being present to observe it physically. That was my goal and Georgia O'Keeffe was my muse; she was married to Stieglitz and had a role in the emergence and acceptance of photography as a serious art form in America. I think when all is said and done, I was successful. Watch and see for yourself whether I am right or wrong.
