In this presentation, Bill Villalon, Faculty Associate in the Supply Chain Department at Arizona State University, explores how the global shipping industry is leveraging AI to optimize massive maritime networks. Major carriers like Maersk are utilizing advanced machine learning models to analyze real-time data, including ocean currents, weather patterns, and satellite information. This allows them to execute ad hoc route changes that avoid rough seas and port congestion. Villalon highlights that these AI-driven strategies for route optimization and predictive maintenance are already yielding immense financial and environmental benefits, with some carriers reporting up to $300 million in annual fuel savings and significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. While AI can rapidly calculate complex network pivots, Villalon notes the physical limitations of the shipping world. Permanent schedule changes still require months of logistical coordination for crew and berthing arrangements. However, the ability to make real-time, data-informed adjustments on the fly represents a major leap forward in mitigating vessel overcapacity and navigating geopolitical or weather-related disruptions.
