Learning to Lead: Preserving Susan B Anthony's Vision for Education and Civic Responsibility

The Phi Beta Kappa Society and the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House hosted an engaging conversation on how Anthony’s work in education reform helped shape democratic engagement and how the museum continues to preserve and share her legacy today. Deborah Hughes, President & CEO of the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, provided an insightful presentation on the museum’s mission, Anthony’s belief in education as a pillar of democracy, and the role of artifacts in telling her story. Moderated by Esther Jones, President of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, this discussion connected Anthony’s legacy to the Society's mission of advancing knowledge and civic engagement through the arts and sciences. Meet our Presenters: Deborah L. Hughes is President & CEO of the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, the National Historic Landmark in Rochester, NY, that was home and headquarters for the great reformer. During her tenure, the Anthony Museum has completed a major restoration, secured its Absolute Charter as a Museum, dramatically grown attendance, and is now embarking on a major campus expansion. Hughes has spearheaded innovative programming such as the award-winning “VoteTilla”, a weeklong event with scholars and re-enactors who traveled in packet boats on the canals from Seneca Falls to Rochester for New York State’s Suffrage Centennial. Prior to the Anthony Museum, Deborah had a career as an ordained minister, serving churches in Michigan and New York, and working on the executive staff of her denomination’s pension board. She has a B.S. from the University of Oregon, an M. Div. from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, and a Certificate in Fundraising from Indiana University/Purdue University. Esther L. Jones is President of the national Phi Beta Kappa Society, the United States’ oldest and most prestigious honor society. Currently, she is the Associate Dean for Faculty Development at Brown University. This inaugural role supports faculty development at all career stages, from new faculty orientation and onboarding to retirement, to renewal of focus and energy for midcareer faculty promotion, leadership development, and career advancement. Prior to joining Brown, she served as the Associate Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Clark University, where she led the recruitment, retention, and development strategy for faculty. She holds a B.A. in English and Music, an M.A. in African American & African Studies, and a Ph.D. in English.
