The mystery surrounding who designed and built Liverpool’s oldest building may finally have been solved. The Bluecoat on School Lane dates from 1717 and began life as a charity school before becoming the city’s centre for contemporary arts. New research has identified master mason Edward Litherland and engineer Thomas Steers as the people responsible for designing and building the iconic structure. They also designed and built Liverpool’s famous Old Dock which opened in 1715. The information was unearthed by examining records as part of heritage project My Bluecoat ahead of the building’s 300th anniversary next year. Our reporter Nathan Griffiths has this report.
