In this Color Of Conversation Eve's Bayou Director Kasi Lemmons talks about her creative process for developing "Eve's Bayou". That it came to her in dreams and from visiting a fortune teller. Writing Eve's Bayou was a solitary process and a lot of Kasi came out. She talks about the vulnerability of the story and that it's a personal story but not an autobiography. Eve was Kasi but was also a little bit of "scout" in to kill a mockingbird. Kasi goes on to talk about race and representation and Dr. Toni Morrison. She talks about creating a black world and says it was challenged in the meeting process when she was trying to get the film made. There are no white extras and no white people at all in Eve's Bayou. Kasi talks about Debi Morgans dress and how people on the crew were challenging her on the realism of Debi's dress considering the time period of 1962. Kasi talks about the "grey area" of humanity and that the film has universality and speaks to anyone. Kasi says Eve's Bayou is a human story about humans. Kasi Lemmons talks about how she brought all the actors on board the film Eve's Bayou. She goes on to say the Sam Jackson, in many ways got the film made. He was a tremendous part of the process. Debi Morgan was cast because she was undeniably the best person for the part. Kasi says that you really have to meet each actor where they are and that everybody was different. Kasi talks about the different directors that she worked with as an actor and what she learned from each director. It's intimate because you are watching the actors molecules and that great actors are good when speaking with their souls. Regarding a sequel Kasi says that's a really hard question and she's not sure if she would want to do that. Kasi talks about having family keeps her grounded and that there's things much more important than making movies. Finally, Kasi talks about the importance of telling our own story and that great art should be a little embarrassing and painful.
