Ellen Greenberg had 20 stab wounds — including to the back of her head and neck. Her death was ruled a suicide. This is the 911 call. On January 26, 2011, 27-year-old first-grade teacher Ellen Greenberg was found dead on her kitchen floor in her Manayunk apartment in Philadelphia. She had been making a fruit salad. A 10-inch knife was lodged four inches into her chest. She had 20 stab wounds and 11 bruises in various stages of healing. Her fiancé Sam Goldberg called 911. He told the operator the door was locked from the inside. He said he had to break it down. He said nobody else was in the apartment. And within two seconds of mentioning a knife, he told the operator exactly what happened — before any question was asked. The medical examiner initially ruled her death a homicide. That ruling was changed to suicide. The apartment was professionally cleaned before homicide investigators returned to the scene. Personal electronics were removed by a member of Goldberg's family. No Crime Scene Unit was ever called. In January 2025, the original pathologist who performed Ellen's autopsy signed a sworn statement saying her death should be designated as something other than suicide. In October 2025, the Hulu documentary "Death in Apartment 603" brought the case back into the national spotlight. In January 2026, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania requested documents from the Philadelphia Police Department and other agencies. Fifteen years later, Ellen's parents Josh and Sandee Greenberg are still fighting for the truth. This analysis examines the 911 call word by word. Every pronoun. Every verb tense. Every hesitation.
