This is a book review of Ulysses by James Joyce. In it, I ask myself why is Ulysses considered one of the greatest literary works of all time? What is it that this book contains that resonates with so many people and revolts so many more? In order to explore that question, I summarize what the book is about. Ulysses follows a day in the life of three characters; Leopold Bloom an ethnically Jewish man of great appetite, who couldn’t be farther from culturally Jewish, Molly Bloom, his wife, the adulterous modern woman, and Stephan Dedalus the young lost artist. Each of them lives out a retelling of Homer's masterpiece the Odyssey in the context of modern Dublin. The book shows how their seemingly average lives are just as significant as those of Odysseus and Penelope. So, not only does this book have a compelling plot, but it is written in a very unique fashion. James Joyce is considered one of the most inventive modernist writers of all time and that title is in large part justified by this book. He isn't just writing a book, he's playing with words and with language. James Joyce imitates thought through his stream-of-consciousness technique, which can feel messy at times, but in effect, Joyce permeates your consciousness long after completing his book. Ulysses was a fantastic book, it continues to stay with me and means more to me after reading it. I would say at its worst it can feel like paint drying on the first read, but afterward, you'll want to watch that paint dry all over again. 0:00 Intro 0:42 Summary 5:26 Modernism 7:17 My Actual Review #ulysses #bloomsday #odysseus Some visuals used from Ted Ed animations: • Why should you read James Joyce's "Ulysses...
