The Night’s Nexus is fought again as the final boss of the game, and unfortunately it’s kind of a letdown. Not in the sense that it isn’t difficult, but the difficulty is mostly in the first phase while the second phase is just a really long slog that isn’t all that interesting. The boss was more or less designed around the idea that you’d have higher stats and access to some late-game jobs and abilities like Bravebearer, which aren’t valid options in this playthrough. Because of that, the only way to win this battle within the rules that I set is the boring way. Challenge run rules: 1. EXP and JP may only be obtained in forced battles required for the true ending. EXP and JP orbs are banned. 2. Hard difficulty 3. No using Booster Buns to increase stats 4. No attack items, including status bombs from Salve-Maker's Compounding ability 5. No use of the Beastmaster or Gambler jobs 6. No Godspeed Strike, BP Tonic, BP Depleter, or Attention Seeker 7. No strategies that are reliant on bosses running out of MP This time, The Night’s Nexus is fought in two separate battles. The first battle is nearly identical to the third battle of the previous encounter, except the main body and hands have higher HP and presumably higher stats as well. For the most part, it plays out in the same way. The main differences are that all party members need to have a different equipment setup and/or job setup in preparation for the second phase of this battle, so it’s a little more difficult than before. However, it is easier to reset in the case of defeat since this is the first battle rather than the third. When The Night’s Nexus is defeated in the first phase, the battle enters something of an intermission phase. It’s mostly a scripted gimmick and I’m not even sure that it’s possible to lose during this part, but I didn’t want to waste my time finding out. It’s pretty easy to survive anyway since Seth has a high turn speed. When all four party members remember who they are, the second phase begins and all four are set to 3 BP and full HP. This is where the battle gets really stupid, since I don’t have access to any of the abilities that would make this phase less of a mess in this playthrough. The Night’s Nexus has extremely high stats, much higher than any enemies encountered previously, and six different skills that make this battle really annoying: A World Annihilated and A World Forsaken deal party-wide damage (I assume one is physical and the other is magical), A Courage Squandered reduces the BP of each party member by 1, A Wellspring Depleted reduces the MP of each party member to 0, A Tragic Denouement debuffs all stats of each party member by 35%, and A Life Cut Short casts Death on a target. Additionally, most of these are used as counters to various actions; A Courage Squandered counters items, A Wellspring Depleted counters defaulting, A Tragic Denouement counters status ailments, and A Life Cut Short counters buffs. These are all very annoying when it comes to actually damaging The Night’s Nexus. Defensively, this phase isn’t really that tough at all. A World Annihilated and A World Forsaken don’t do that much damage compared to the previous phase, and they’re usually used infrequently enough to revive and heal the Shieldmasters easily, even with the debuffs of A Tragic Denouement. Seth and Gloria can use Reprisal to deal some damage back, although in the case of Seth he gets knocked out by A Life Cut Short way too often because he didn’t have space for a Safety Ring. Offensively, this battle is a nightmare because of how hard it is for Adelle to deal any damage. For the first time, the 50% attack buff from berserk is insufficient since The Night’s Nexus has such high stats, so Become the Lightning has to be used to further buff her attack. Adelle needs to have Rage and Reason kick in twice without A Courage Squandered and A Tragic Denouement being used more than once, which makes this strategy really inconsistent. Elvis can use Purify to remove debuffs from A Tragic Denouement, but unfortunately it removes Become the Lightning buffs as well. Aside from that, this battle is just really stupid with the tools available. Gloria and Elvis can use Compounding for HP and MP healing since that doesn’t trigger counters, but aside from that Adelle is the only one who can really do anything of value (besides Reprisal). This isn’t a tough battle, it just takes forever; I couldn’t even win before The Night’s Nexus ran out of MP. You can see in the last three minutes of this video how laughably easy it is to defeat The Night’s Nexus when it’s not using A Courage Squandered and A Tragic Denouement, which really just wastes a ton of time with this setup. I really would have liked to win before it ran out of MP, but that would have required much better RNG. There’s no reason that I wouldn’t have been able to win if it had unlimited MP though, it just would have taken significantly longer to defeat.
