This structure, dated from 1815, is one of the last remaining types of evidence of slave housing in Kent County Maryland. This cabin is part of the Columbia Farms property that was once owned by John Corey who purchased it in April 1852. According to the Corey family lore, the property came with several slaves, all of whom were immediately freed after Corey purchased the property. Corey, along with another nearby farmer, hired freed Blacks to work on their farms and was known to be considerate to his laborers. It is less likely that the workers lived in this cabin after 1852. The property still remains with the Corey family and retains its original 300 acres of farmland. --- This is one of twelve properties documented in partnership with Preservation Maryland.
