Tuesday, November 25, 1969. Footage of Pele (Edson Arantes Do Nascimento) the Brazilian football star meeting General Emilio Medici, the military ruler and president of the country in the capital city Brasilia. Pele had recently scored what was heralded as his 1,000th goal. Footage: Reuters News Archive. NB. A coup d'etat brought a military dictatorship to power in Brazil on April 1st 1964. The military would go on to rule Brazil for 21 years instituting an authoritarian environment which utilised heavily repressive measures against political dissidents (mainly leftists) including the widespread use of torture and the operation of death squads. The first military president was Marshal Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco who was succeeded by General Artur da Costa e Silva. After Silva came a provisional Junta following which General Emilio Garrastazu Medici emerged as president. The military regime milked all that it could from the success of the Brazilian national football team which had already won two FIFA World Cup tournaments by the time the military had come to power.
