Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the best snorkel spots on Oahu. Because fishing is prohibited here, the fish are much bigger than in other areas on the island. There were many fish we had never seen before and we have seen A LOT. Actually getting to Hanauma Bay is a bit of a long and complicated process. Getting a ticket to get in can be difficult. You'll want to check their website in case they change any processes but, here's some tips and information to help based off of when we went: 1. Make a reservation online 48 hours in advance (beginning at 7am Hawaii time). Tickets sell out within minutes sometimes. You do not pay for the tickets online, just the reservation. 2. How much does it cost? Parking is $3 per car (cash only). Tickets are $25 per person at check in (cards accepted). 3. Everyone must watch a short educational video about Hanauma Bay then you are free to go down to the Bay. You can walk down a paved path (about 5 minutes) or take the free open air tram down to the beach. 4. We would suggest packing as light as possible to make traveling up and down from Bay easier, but you can bring a cooler with water, food, drinks, water toys, towels ect. Food is available to purchase at a snack bar past the check in area. There are bathrooms at this area as well and snorkel gear rentals. 5. Schedule an earlier ticket if you can. It takes a minimum of 30 minutes to actually get down to the water once you arrive. The gates close at 4 so everyone is called back to the parking lot starting at 3 pm. 6. It is possible to get in without a reservation. We did not have one. We showed up around 9 am on a Saturday and we were directed to a no reservation line. It was a very long wait and we ended up getting down to the beach around noon. So just be prepared to wait a few hours if you don't get a reservation. 7. Always check the surf report for the area before you go. If the waves are big there will be some strong current and murky water. Ideal time to go is in the Summer on a flat day.
