The expression “the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be over marriage and the family” comes from a letter Sister Lucia of Fatima (the longest-living seer of the Fatima apparitions) wrote in the early 1980s to Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, then Archbishop of Bologna. In that letter, she said that the decisive spiritual battle in the world would focus on defending the institution of marriage and the family — understood in Catholic teaching as the foundation of human life and society. According to this tradition: Satan’s strategy is believed to be targeted at undermining the family unit — especially its foundations in marriage between a man and a woman — because a strong, faith-centered family is seen as the primary place where faith, virtue, and Christian identity are nurtured. The phrase “final battle” doesn’t refer to an ultimate, apocalyptic showdown in the future only, but rather points to ongoing cultural and spiritual struggles today — such as pressures against traditional marriage, attacks on life, and challenges to faith formation within homes. The message also includes reassurance: those who work for the good of the family will encounter opposition, but they should not be afraid, because “Our Lady has already crushed [the devil’s] head” — a symbolic reference to victory through Christ and the protection of Mary.
