Experience the breathtaking diversity of wildlife in India—a land teeming with an incredible array of species. From the majestic Himalayas in the north to the lush rainforests of the south, the vast deserts of the west, and the enchanting mangroves of the east, India’s ecosystems create a captivating tapestry of life. As part of the Indomalayan realm, India is home to an impressive share of the world’s biodiversity, including 7.6% of mammals, 14.7% of amphibians, 6% of birds, 6.2% of reptiles, and 6% of flowering plants. Its forests shelter over 500 mammal species and more than 2,000 bird species, reflecting the country’s extraordinary wildlife richness. Four of India’s national symbols even celebrate its remarkable mammals, a tribute to their enduring cultural significance. India is a global biodiversity hotspot, encompassing three of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots—the Western Ghats, Eastern Himalayas, and Indo-Burma region. Recognized as one of the seventeen megadiverse countries, it boasts seven Natural World Heritage Sites, eleven UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, and thirty-seven Ramsar Wetlands. To protect this natural wealth from threats like habitat loss, poaching, and human encroachment, India established national parks and protected areas as early as 1935. Landmark initiatives like the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) and Project Tiger have safeguarded critical habitats, with additional federal protections strengthening conservation over the decades. Beyond its iconic wildlife, India also harbors lesser-known treasures—like roughly 2,714 endemic lichen species. In 2020, the Uttarakhand Forest Department inaugurated the Lichen Park in Munsiyari, underscoring India’s commitment to preserving its unique and irreplaceable natural heritage. #India #Tiger #WildlifeOfIndia #Peacock #Biodiversity
