Researchers discovered that antibodies against endogenous retroviruses (i.e., relics of ancestral retroviral infections that occurred thousands of years ago) promote the efficacy of immune checkpoint blockade in mice and human patients with lung cancer. In this Microbial Minutes, we discuss these findings and their implications for the development and deployment of cancer therapeutics. We also explore the deliberate application of viruses for treating cancer. Resources The Studies Ng K.W., et al. Antibodies against endogenous retroviruses promote lung cancer immunotherapy. Nature.
