Rosalind Russell was born to a wealthy family and found herself the middle of seven siblings. She had an incredibly happy childhood and developed a predilection for making her many siblings laugh at an early age. After graduating from college, Rosalind broke out onto the New York City stage scene in the late 1920s. She made her official debut on Broadway in the year 1930, performing in the Garrick Gaieties. After a brief period of time making a name for herself on the stage, Rosalind was offered her first Hollywood contract. This contract came from then-fledgling studio Universal Pictures. Though Rosalind was initially excited, she became disappointed upon realizing that the studio had no idea what to do with her. Upon realizing that she didn’t have much of a future at Universal Pictures, Rosalind screen tested with MGM and was offered a contract by the much more prestigious studio. In 1940, she appeared alongside Cary Grant in the iconic feature His Girl Friday and met her husband during the picture’s filming. She would remain married to that same husband until her death many decades later, and they would welcome a son after their first year of marriage.
