Clinton visited the so-called "house of loving care", a special unit set up by the hospital to provide psychological care and treatment to AIDS patients. Clinton presented a gift to the hospital - two copies of his signed autobiography "My Life." The hospital gave Clinton their own gift - a painting drawn by one of the AIDS patients. Clinton also had a meeting with a couple of AIDS patients and, according to hospital officials, was "very impressed and satisfied with the living and treatment conditions" of AIDS patients. The former president, who has been actively involved with HIV/AIDS prevention and control, promised to donate AIDS medicine for Chinese children diagnosed with the deadly disease. His visit to the country''s capital was to promote his foundation''s efforts to fight AIDS. In April 2004, the Clinton Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding with China''s Health Ministry, promising to provide technical assistance in AIDS care and treatment to China. During his visit to the hospital, Clinton said he was encouraged by the cooperation between the Clinton Foundation and China and that his foundation will continue to provide necessary support to China in preventing the spread of an HIV/AIDS epidemic. There are 840,000 HIV carriers in China, according to government estimates, and nearly 80,000 among them have AIDS. Beijing has become increasingly open about its AIDS epidemic after years of denial, promising to provide free anti-retroviral treatment for the poor and free testing and counselling for those who seek it. Since leaving office, former president Clinton has been using his celebrity status to provide help through his Little Rock, Arkansas-based foundation.
