Filmed in Harlem, New York on June 5, 1999, Warren “Birdland” Suttles (1925-2009), baritone and original founding member of the Ravens delivers an extended on-camera interview discussing the group’s role in the evolution of rhythm and blues and vocal group harmony music. Interviewed by bass singer Arthur Crier in conjunction with the “Pioneers of Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll and Doo-Wop” photo event held the next day on Shriver’s Row, Suttles was 74 years old at the time. In these 22 minutes of film, Warren discusses the group’s formation in New York City in 1946, the origin of their name, their repertoire, and his fellow singing partners, Maithe Marshall, Jimmy Ricks and Leonard Puzey. He also touches upon money problems and dissention within the group, personnel changes, the comparisons between Marshall and tenor Joe Van Loan, and the group’s enduring legacy as pioneers in their field. Suttles was inducted into the United in group Harmony Association Hall of Fame in 1991, the Vocal group Hall of Fame in 1998, and received the Harlem Jazz and Music Festival Rhythm and Blues Award in 2006. Warren reunited with his surviving bandmates at concerts in 1974 and 1987. He was the last surviving member of the original group when he passed away in July of 2009 at age 84.
