Where NATURE Meets WONDER: Upper Kananaskis Falls

The Upper Kananaskis Falls hike is a beautiful and moderately challenging trail located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta. The hike offers stunning views of rocky mountains, mossy forests, and the Upper Kananaskis Lake. The trail alternates between open sunlight and shaded forest areas, so it's recommended to bring sunscreen, water, and bug spray. Canadian Rockies Hike. July 22/2023 Summer Hike, Alberta Canada Today we are in Kananaskis Country, and we will be hiking up to Upper Kananaskis Falls. The trail will take us along Upper Kananaskis Lake, through a boulder field, and at the other end of the lake we will reach the falls. This hike was 9.8 kilometers (6 Miles) with an elevation gain of 295 meters (968 Feet). The trailhead is located at the North Interlakes parking lot. The parking lot is a pretty good size. From the parking lot you will make your way over the dam. As you cross the dam, the Lower Kananaskis Lake will be on your right. The trail will take you left once you cross the dam. I have been out here quite a few times and I have never seen the lake as calm as it was. The trail starts out really wide. At .7k you will arrive at a branch in the trail. I took the trail to the left to go down to the lake, the main trail continues straight. The lake was just magical, beautiful reflections of the mountains and clouds in the water. I continued walking along the lakeshore for a while before making my way back up to the main trail. Soon you will come across another intersection in the trail. Take the trail to the left, which says 2.7k to the Point Campground. This trail will have a little up and down all the way along the lake and it is not quite as wide. Soon I met up with my sister and Bev taking pictures at the lakeshore. After snapping some pictures, we continued on. There are numerous spots along this trail where you can get some great views of the lake and the mountains on the other side. The trail now starts to get a little rooty. Shortly after 2.2k the trail will start to take you away from the lake and you will be going up for a little bit. At 2.6k you will now be entering the boulder field section. There is a defined trail through here but be careful as you don’t want to trip on the rocks. Here the trail really opens up and you have wonderful views in all directions. You will now be heading away from the lake again, but you will have some great views of the lake on your left. Once you get out of the boulder field section you will now be at the other end of Upper Kananaskis Lake. At 3.5k the trail trail will take you along the lake. At 3.9k you will arrive at the sign for the Point Backcountry Campground. The trail to the left will take you into the campground. Keep going straight to continue to the falls. We detoured into the campground to have our lunch. The trail will take you into the trees but at spots you will get some more great views on your left. We went off trail to head down to the creek that was flowing into the lake. At 5.1k take the trail to the left to the falls. I was quite surprised at the amount of water flowing over the falls. I have been out here numerous times, but this is the highest water levels I have seen. We enjoyed the falls for a while and then it was time to head back. This is an awesome hike for the whole family. I highly recommend it. Once we got back to the parking lot the winds were really strong. Not the best time to be on the water. This is my 122nd video.
