Almaty - February 5 - Poland won gold in team Nordic combined (3x5km relay): Gold: Adam Cieslar, Pawel Slowiok, Wojciech Marusarz (Poland) – 34:07.9 Silver: Viacheslav Barkov, Timofey Borisov, Samir Mastiev (Russia) – 34:52.7 Bronze: Shota Horigome, Go Sonehara, Go Yamamoto (Japan) – 35:29.1 Nordic combined is one of the Universiade’s oldest disciplines. The competitions in Nordic combined have been held since 1960. Team Nordic combined, however, has been a part of the Universiade only since 2003. Six teams participated in team Nordic combined competition at the 2017 Universiade. After the ski jumping part, Japanese led the rating. They were followed by the Russian and the German teams. Even before the start of the relay race, it was clear that four teams will be competing to get into top three. The time difference between the teams was small, so the competition had to be fierce. After the first stage, Poland and Japan led the race. The Russian athlete came third, slow by 19 seconds compared to the leader of the race. Germany was number four, lagging behind the leader by 47 seconds. On the second round, the Polish team increased the advantage. The Russian athletes overtook Japan and became second. I like racing, and it was fun for me. The problem is that I haven’t been feeling very well I came here. I could’ve done better but I wasn’t strong enough to overtake the Japanese athlete,” said Samir Mastiev from the Russian team. The Polish team led the race by 37 seconds on the last stage and was aiming for gold. “We didn’t really think of winning the gold. We discussed the race before the start and my goal was to keep on going. I was planning to become a leader of the race only if it would be possible,” said Wojciech Marusarz from Poland. The Russian team could remain second. David Welde from Germany, the winner of the 2015 Universiade was attempting to overtake the Japanese athlete. The latter did everything he could to remain third, so Germany only managed to finish fourth. Stay tuned with FISU and follow us on our different social platforms!
