He composed to primarily depict "Veer Rasa" or the sentiment of valor, courage, prowess, and strength. His dexterity with words and the immense popularity of both subjects of his poetry - Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharaj Chhatrasal, the Bundela King - ensured that his fame spread like wildfire across India. Thus, when he chose to compose a few poems depicting the beauty of nature, everyone sat up and took notice. And, gems as they were, these poems became hugely popular as well. This video presents one such poem written on the season of spring. Vasant - The Season of Spring * Vasant (spring) comes after Shishir (winter) and ushers in a riot of colors with flowers of many varieties in full bloom all across India. The resultant beauty of nature is what is described in this poem - "Basant Ritu Aayi Hai" - which means "Spring is Here". Vasant is also the time for many important festivals such as the Saraswati Puja, Mahashivaratri, Holi, Ranga Panchami, leading up to Gudhi Padwa or Yugadhi or Ugadi and then up to Baisakhi which marks the beginning of summer, although there is a slight variation here depending on where in India you are. Saraswati - the Goddess of Knowledge, Learning, and Music * In India, whenever we learn music or perform any art form, we always invoke the Goddess Saraswati or Ma Sharada or Ma Vinapani (her many names) by saying "Om Saraswati". This is accompanied with an invocation of Lord Ganesha or Vinayak or Lambodar or Damodar (Ganesh Ji's many names). This is the reason why the Sanskrit shlok recited at the beginning of this video has "Vande Vanivinayakau" - or salutation to Goddess Saraswati (Vani) and Lord Ganesh (Vinayak). This is the first shlok in the Ram Charit Manas written by Goswami Tulsidas Ji.
