In this video I detail why I decided to shave down a vintage martin guitar bridge. The guitar is a very nice 1970 D35 Martin guitar, featuring Indian Rosewood with a Brazilian Rosewood center. I explain my process to shave the bridge. If you enjoyed this video please SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and COMMENT to help me make more content for you. If this video helped you, consider saying thanks with a Super Thanks (just like giving a tip) Common Questions Asked in the comments (This section is added to over the first first days of a videos posting as a pattern of common questions form) 1- Why not do it properly and do everything needed? Cost vs need vs want- the only thing this guitar really needed was better action, which I achieved with a $100 repair. You can play with not perfect intonation- everyone with a 1970's martin does. while the frets are divoted, they did not cause buzz. When the frets give out, and its time for new frets- that is the perfect time to do everything- New bridge in correct spot, neck reset, new frets (compression fretting), new nut. 2- After all that, the intonation was ok? I was able to get the intonation on the treble side to an ok place because, (1)- I lowered the action so the string had less displacement, and (2) the saddle slot had already been widened to 1/8" (not factory), which bought me 1/32 more area to work with to move the break angle to the very back of the saddle- which is the worst place for it (the saddle can chip) but it works. Then intonation on the bass side was still 15 cents sharp. Only a new bridge will fix the bass intonation. 3- Could you heat treat the neck to straighten out the 0.018 relief? Yes, but without compression fretting to hold the heat treated straight neck straight, the neck would return to having too much relief. Heat treatment is small step in a larger repair- it isn't a repair in itself (not one to be relied upon anyway). 4- Could you have shaved the fretboard down? I do that on cheap guitars (as in the guitar cost $350) guitars (I have a video on it). Best not to remove any FB if you can help it on vintage stuff and good/expensive guitars. When this is refretted, some fretboard will be sanded away when the FB is preped for new frets. 5- To fix the intonation, could you make a new bridge and move it backwards (or move the original backwards 1/8"?) Yes, but I with everything else wrong with this guitar (A neck reset is best ) id advise to get it all done at once. There are two ways to do it- which ill detail in a future video. But the two choices are (1) Use the original bridge and move it back so the saddle is in the correct place (best if the original bridge is in good usable condition). This requires finish and color touch up to the front of the bridge (2) Make an new bridge with 1/8" wood at the front so its front edge sits on the front edge of the original bridge footprint- no finish and color work is needed with this repair. I've done both depending on the condition of the original bridge. The larger bridge isn't an eyesaw- at least, no more then new finish/color work. Pick your poison!
