Medical devices are recalled when they’ve caused injury or have the potential to cause injury. Between 2005 and 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled more than 211,000 units of hernia mesh because they had a high failure rate, the potential to cause injury, or the packaging had inadequate warnings. The majority of recalled hernia mesh were produced by four companies: Atrium, Bard, Covidien, and Ethicon. The FDA has a searchable database where you can look up if a hernia mesh was recalled.
