Join me as I head to Catalina Island for a Saturday morning breakfast. I leave out of Alamitos Bay and dock at Avalon. Conditions have been pretty windy lately with big seas, but today conditions were pretty calm. See below for some frequently asked questions. **FAQ** -How far out in the ocean can you take the boat? This is the question I get asked the most. The simple answer is that there is no magical line in the sand that you can’t cross. How far you go out depends on many factors including your experience as a Captain, weather conditions, how much weight you are carrying in the boat, is the engine well maintained, how much gas you have, etc… That being said, I will regularly take the boat out with family 10 miles or more. In this trip I went 30 miles. -How fast is the Boat? I explained in a previous video that I replaced the prop with one that has more low end torque. In its current condition, the boat will go 27 MPH. On the ocean, I rarely ever go that fast. -How much does the boat cost? It’s been a few years since I purchased the boat and prices have gone up on everything. WhalyUSA posts their prices on their website. I recommend going there to start pricing things out. -Is it a wet ride? I always tell the people I take out to plan on getting some spray. Driving the boat at the helm I stay pretty dry. The boat throws water to the sides as it cutting through waves. If you are in the front of the boat on a choppy day and we are heading into to wind, you are going to get some spray. If the wind is at your back on a choppy day, you will stay dry and its pretty neat to watch the water spraying out at the sides. I live in Southern California… Getting a little ocean spray on you in the middle of summer feels pretty good.. -How far can you go on a tank of gas? My Suzuki DF30A came with a 6 1/2 gallon tank. The engine is pretty fuel efficient. On the trip in this video I went to Catalina and back (just under 70 miles dock to dock) on 6 gallons of gas. Going I was 3/4 throttle most of the trip, running around 20 MPH. When I docked at Avalon I had 3/4 of a tank left. On the return trip I had the bimini top up and ran the boat at full throttle most of the way (around 24-26 MPH). When I got home I checked the tank and had around 1/2 gallon left. I also had an extra 5 gallons of gas on board just incase. Clearly I could have gotten much better fuel economy if I stayed at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle… -How long did it take you to get to Catalina? Going took approximately 1 hour 30 min Return trip took approximately 1 hour 20 min -Do you recommend the Whaly 435R? YES!!!!
