TODAY’S LESSON: In today’s lesson, I go through how to interpret carbon (C-13) NMR spectra to identify an unknown molecule. I show you the important pieces of information that can be extracted from carbon NMR spectra, such as the number of unique carbon environments and the relationship between electronegativity and chemical shift. We put all these clues together to match the spectra with the molecule. This is the FIFTH lesson in a series on NMR spectroscopy questions typically encountered in A-level and AP Chemistry. Links to the other lessons are provided below. The hydrogen and carbon NMR data sheet I use in these questions is also linked.
