While on her way to visit the village of Hathras, where a gruesome gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old dalit woman has outraged many across the country, Priyanka Vadra Gandhi jumped into action upon seeing the UP police lathi charge a group of Congress workers at the Delhi-UP border. Attempting to protect them, she put herself between the lathis and her party workers in a bid to shielf them. Visuals from the scene sparked further outrage. Both Priyanka and Rahul were later allowed to visit the Hathras village, after being twice-denied in the past. There, they met with the grieving victim's family for an hour.
