This December, we are delighted to welcome MiMi Aung, Project Manager of the unprecedented Mars Helicopter at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology. The Mars Helicopter 'Ingenuity' is a feat of engineering and the first of its kind as the first powered flight on any planet beyond Earth. MiMi led a multi-disciplinary team across NASA and outside partners navigating the innovation, engineering and mathematical challenges that will make the first-ever aerial flight in the very thin atmosphere at Mars possible. During her 30-year career at NASA's JPL, she has performed different roles in space flight projects, Deep Space Network projects, technology development and organizational management, in multiple technical areas including Autonomous Systems; spacecraft Guidance, Navigation & Control; multiple-spacecraft Formation Flying; Deep Space Signal Processing and Communications. Born to Myanmar parents in academia, MiMi has been fascinated by mathematics from a young age. We will discuss how she got interested in NASA, what it takes to be successful in a career, the challenges, the rewards of a scientific career and the behind the scenes story of the seven-year journey of the development of the Mars Helicopter Ingenuity. Join us on this very special last TEDxYangon session for 2020!
