Season 2 of Star Trek Picard launches in February on Amazon Prime. Season 1 was, put politely, controversial. Put accurately, it was a masterwork of cynicism, nihilism and divisive politics, deconstructing and tearing down everything that once made Star Trek great, from the Federation to Picard himself. In this, the first in a four-part critique of Star Trek Picard, we delve into the philosophy that underpinned the series. We explore the philosophical and ethical basis of Old Trek, especially The Next Generation, and compare it with the philosophical and ethical basis of NuTrek, which has sought to infect the ideals of Star Trek with the worst aspects of contemporary politics; the anger, the bitterness, the resentment. Part two, which will critique the plot of season one and the choices made, by Patrick Stewart and Alex Kurtzman, about characterisation, will be out next weekend.
