Rethinking the 'person' in person-centered dementia care

This presentation explores the philosophy of person-centered dementia care (PCC), the ways in which it informs the practice of care and the ways in which person-centered care is experienced by care recipients at two faith-based long-term care centres. Drawing on focus groups and interviews, the philosophy and practice of person-centered care needs to be reassessed, particularly in light of experiences of front-line care providers, individuals with early-stage dementia and their family caregivers. Originally presented: January 7, 2025 Presenter: Timothy Epp is the professor of sociology at Redeemer University in Ancaster, Ontario, where he has served for 23 years. He received his PhD in social anthropology from York University (Toronto) in 1999 before completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Kenneth G. Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program at the University of Waterloo. His current research interests and publications are in the areas of disability, dementia and personhood; the social history of race relations in Anabaptist traditions; and spirituality within popular culture.
