Professor Paul Higate from the Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies at the University of Bath delivers his inaugural lecture, 'Interrogating British armed forces recruiting in contemporary times'. This lecture looks at the ways in which so-called 'British values' have helped to obfuscate the militarised character of the nation, manifest in its long history of the use of military violence perpetrated abroad. Nested in a personal account of service in the Royal Air Force, it goes on to draw links between 'British values', the army's 2018 recruiting campaign 'this is belonging', the Home Office instigated 'hostile environment' and the racialised character of social policy more broadly. In sum, it reveals the performative work done by 'British values' in preserving the sense that 'the British' are decent, fair and tolerant - a claim argued to be at sharp odds with the empirical record.
