Syndactyly is a condition in which children are born with fused or webbed fingers. About half of children with syndactyly have it in both hands (bilateral). Most of the time, syndactyly affects the fingers. Sometimes it affects the toes, but not as often. Many cases seem to occur without an apparent cause, while some may occur due to a genetic ( inherited ) defect, environmental exposure during pregnancy, or a combination or both factors. Syndactyly may also occur as a part of an underlying genetic syndrome and can be found in over 300 different genetic syndromes. Can syndactyly be fixed? Complex syndactyly should also be repaired by age 1. Early repair can prevent the boney fusion of fingers from causing worsening finger deformities, and allow the digits to grow. In rare cases, the fingers or toes may be connected by bone. Approximately 1 in every 2,000–3,000 babies is born with webbed fingers or toes, making this a fairly common condition. Webbing of the fingers is most common in white males. What is syndactyly finger? Syndactyly is the abnormal connection of 2 fingers. Most commonly, it is a webbing between 2 fingers- the middle and ring fingers. However, it can involve any two fingers or can involve the thumb and pointer finger. It can also involve more than 2 fingers. Is syndactyly a birth defect? What is syndactyly? Syndactyly is a condition in which children are born with fused or webbed fingers. Cognitive abilities in people with Apert syndrome range from normal to mild or moderate intellectual disability. Individuals with Apert syndrome have syndactyly of the fingers and toes . The severity of the fusion varies, although the hands tend to be more severely affected than the feet. Is webbed toes a sign of anything? Cause of Webbed Fingers or Toes In most cases, webbing of the fingers or toes occurs at random, for no known reason. Less commonly, webbing of the fingers and toes is inherited. Webbing can also be related to genetic defects, such as Crouzon syndrome and Apert syndrome. Are webbed toes a sign of autism? Timothy syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with autism spectrum disorders and caused by a mutation in a single gene. In addition to autism, it is also characterized by cardiac arrhythmias, webbed fingers and toes, and hypoglycemia, and often leads to death in early childhood. Can webbed fingers be separated? Separating your child's webbed or fused fingers or toes will allow each digit to move independently. This procedure is intended to restore full functionality to your child's hand or foot. If your child has more than one area of webbing, their surgeon may recommend multiple surgeries to minimize their risks. What is the difference between polydactyly and syndactyly? Polydactyly and syndactyly are congenital malformations of the fingers and/or toes. Polydactyly is the presence of extra fingers or toes, and syndactyly is the fusing together or webbing of two or more fingers or toes. Why do my two fingers stuck together? Syndactyly is a condition wherein two or more digits are fused together. It occurs normally in some mammals, such as the siamang and diprotodontia, but is an unusual condition in humans. The term is from Greek (syn) σύν meaning "together" and (daktulos) δάκτυλος meaning "finger". Is syndactyly dominant or recessive? Type V syndactyly is inherited as an autosomal dominant entity, and it has been attributed to a missense mutation in homeodomain of HOXD13 in a Chinese family. Is syndactyly a mutation? Syndactyly type 1 may be inherited in an autosomal dominant manner and is suspected to be caused by a gene mutation on the long (q) arm of chromosome 2 between 2q34 and 2q36. Treatment usually involves surgery to separate the digits. Does syndactyly skip a generation? It is variably expressed and penetrance is incomplete. This means that syndactyly will often skip a generation or present in different forms from previous affected family members.
