An elegant understated performance by British pianist Moura Lympany of this iconic Rachmaninoff piano concerto. Plus the the lush sound of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Dame Moura Lympany (1916-2005) was born Mary Johnstone. Her father was a British military officer and her mother taught her piano. She gave her first concert at age 12. It was at that point that she adopted a stage name on the advice of a conductor. She later studied at the Royal Academy of music, and later with Paul Weingarten and Mathilde Verne. By the start of World War II, she had become one of the most popular concert pianists in the UK. In 1940 she premiered the Khatchaturian Piano Concerto in London. During the War she was among the musicians who gave free performances to support public morale. She resumed her career after the war playing in Europe and abroad. In 1969 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but continued performing after a mastectomy, and later following her second mastectomy. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1992.
