Earlier the same day, at least 59 people were killed when a suicide bomber had detonated explosives inside a crowded mosque in a compound which includes headquarters of the provincial police force and a counterterrorism department. Most of the casualties were police officers. A commander of the Pakistani Taliban initially claimed responsibility for the attack, but the group known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan later denied involvement.
