The Data Science Lab presents Inside Data Journalism, a spring talk series featuring leading practitioners who share practical insights into their work and the evolving field of data journalism. Inside Data Journalism, a spring talk series by the Data Science Lab, runs from March to May and offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from established experts shaping public discourse through data. About the speaker: Laura Bronner is a political scientist and data journalist working at the intersection of data science, causal inference, and public discourse. She is currently a Senior Applied Scientist at the Public Policy Group and Immigration Policy Lab at ETH Zurich and the Scientific Director of the Public Discourse Foundation, where she develops research and tools to improve the quality of online discussions and counter harmful speech using computational and experimental methods. Before joining ETH Zurich, Bronner was the Quantitative Editor at FiveThirtyEight, where she reviewed methodology and code for data-driven stories and contributed political and policy analyses. She previously worked as a Senior Analyst at the Analyst Institute, designing and analyzing large-scale field experiments during the 2018 U.S. election cycle. Bronner holds a PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics, and earlier degrees in politics and history from the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on the use of computational methods and causal inference to understand political behavior, online communication, and interventions that can improve the health of digital public discourse.
