Evesham

When I was first elected in September 2024, I put forward a proposal (using this film) aimed at better connecting local businesses, residents, and the council. The appearance and perception of the town centre has affects on all who live in and around the space and I made this one of my main focuses. Our town was shaped by the prosperity of market gardening, but like many places, it has taken its share of blows as retail has steadily shifted online and to out-of-town locations. This is a national trend, yet Evesham has distinct advantages; a rich history, remarkable architecture, and a unique riverside setting. At the same time, during the era when large chain stores were seen as the main draw, we gradually eroded some of the very character that made our centre special. Town centres are more than shopping spaces, they are part of our identity. What people see in the centre shapes their impression of the whole town and there are areas that many attribute to ‘the council’ as fault. The reality is, a lot of areas under scrutiny are owned by private investors. It’s my opinion, that to drive change, we need to work to encourage uplift and make what feels neglected - investable. There has been progress. We’ve welcomed new independent businesses, seen shopfront improvements supported by the Wychavon Shared Prosperity Fund, and benefited from a growing programme of events and Place Board projects that celebrate and promote our town. As town centres evolve from being primarily retail spaces into places focused more on community, now is the time to lean into our heritage. It has real value; socially, culturally, and economically.
