(28 Mar 2018) People lined streets of Paris on Wednesday morning to pay their respects to Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame, who was killed after offering himself in exchange for a hostage during last Friday's attack in southern France. The slain hero of last week's extremist attack near Carcassone will be posthumously awarded the Legion of Honor by French President Emmanuel Macron during a solemn day-long national homage to him. Lieutenant-Colonel Beltrame's coffin was taken in a procession from the Pantheon across French capital to the Hotel des Invalides, where Macron will lead the ceremony and deliver a eulogy. Beltrame was amongst the first officers to respond to the attack by an Islamist extremist on the supermarket in the town of Trebes, near Carcassonne. When he went inside the supermarket, he had given up his own weapon and volunteered himself in exchange for a female hostage. Unbeknownst to the Morocco-born captor, Redouane Lakdim, Beltrame left his mobile phone switched on so that police outside could hear what was going on inside the supermarket - and crucially, decide when to storm it. They stormed the building when they heard gunshots, officials said. Beltrame was fatally wounded. Three other people died in the attack. The gunman was also killed, and 15 people were injured in the attack. France's highest award, the Legion of Honor, will be bestowed on Col. Arnaud Beltrame during the various ceremonial events that both honor his memory and provide a focal point for national grief after last Friday's deadly attack.
