Memorial to tornado victims emerges in Kentucky

(16 Dec 2021) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4357620 A makeshift memorial to the victims of a deadly series of tornados has emerged in Kentucky. The memorial, which features photos of many of the victims and countless donated flowers, is located in front of the damaged but still standing courthouse in downtown Mayfield. The memorial was started there by Leo Soto, who flew in from Miami, Florida. He said he was touched by those who offered support during the deadly condo collapse in his hometown earlier this year which took the lives of some of his friends. Soto said he hopes the memorial gives people a place to show their support and help with the healing process. Kentucky authorities said the sheer level of destruction was hindering their ability to tally the damage from the storms. At least 88 people,  including 74 in Kentucky, were killed by the tornado outbreak that also destroyed a nursing home in Arkansas, heavily damaged an Amazon distribution center in Illinois and spread its deadly effects into Tennessee and Missouri. In Kentucky, as searches continued for those still missing, efforts also turned to repairing the power grid, sheltering those whose homes were destroyed and delivering drinking water and other supplies.
