Verrucous carcinoma is a type of slow-growing cancer that usually affects the mucous membranes in the oral cavity, larynx, and genital areas. It is a rare form of cancer and is also known as Ackerman tumor. How is it caused? The exact cause of verrucous carcinoma is not yet known, but it is believed to be associated with chronic irritation, infection, or inflammation in the affected area. Risk factors that may contribute to its development include tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and chronic infections such as syphilis. What are its symptoms? The symptoms of verrucous carcinoma may include a painless, wart-like growth with a rough surface, often with a white or gray color. It may also cause bleeding, bad breath, difficulty swallowing, or a change in voice, depending on its location in the body. What are the genes behind it? There are no specific genes associated with verrucous carcinoma, but studies suggest that alterations in genes such as TP53, EGFR, and PIK3CA may contribute to its development and progression. What is its treatment? The treatment for verrucous carcinoma usually involves surgical removal of the tumor. Radiation therapy may also be used in some cases. Chemotherapy is generally not effective in treating this type of cancer, but it may be used in advanced stages or if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Prognosis for verrucous carcinoma is generally good, with a low risk of recurrence and metastasis.
