“Suddenly he told me that he likes me. He wrote his feelings down on a paper. I was 18 years old. A lovely man. I must say he's changed my life. My name is Radhabhai, and my husband is Ho Ching Kuang. When we first met I was uncomfortable seeing he would walk around near my house for no apparent reason. He was a close friend to my younger brother. I was scared. So I told my younger sister about this letter. She thought he looked educated therefore not a suitable match for me. That our mother wouldn't agree to this. So I left it at that. He wrote to me again and said, being uneducated isn't a hindrance. "I've watched you look after your nephews and nieces. You cook well. I really like you a lot." Eventually I said only if my mother gives her blessings will I get married to you. Otherwise, let's not. He said the same thing too, that his mother's approval is important. Man: Actually I didn't tell them. They found out themselves. Both parents talked, and here we are. I really like his mother. Twenty years that we're staying together, I keep looking forward to Fridays. We'd go and stay there. He cleaned the pipes, repaired the electricity at my mother-in-law's place. My mom and grandmother adores him a lot too. When he goes, they would do a hair oil bath for him. He jokes about losing all his hair now that grandma is no longer around. She's a good lady. Really loves children. All our grandkids calling her Amma, telling her "I love you" cause she treats them very well. If I get married, I'll marry a white man, I playfully said when I was 17. Even my grandmother used to make a fuss about my fascination over the Chinese man. Somehow he came into my life at 18. It will be fifty one years. All fated la, I believe. He's the more pious one between us. In the mornings, he lights up the altar and puts the incense before going off to work. He loves India. Especially Jaya Lalitha and MGR (the actors). He walks around the Vinayagar Temple devotedly 108 times. All our grandchildren fast every Fridays. They say, all religions lead to understanding. Now I go to places of worship for every religion. The two of us will go to any temple we're invited too.” (Credit: Tamil Murasu Sg)
