Today's a bittersweet day, a day of celebrating a wonderful person who has made great contributions to the field of ASL teaching, but also the "retirement" of the same pivotal groundbreaking professor, Dr. Nathie L. Marbury who has taught ASL and interpreting at Austin Community College (ACC). Nathie donated her four decades and more collection of ASL and Deaf Studies books, videos and materials to ACC's library on Riverside campus- home of the ASL-ESOL program where nearly 300 Deaf/HOH students currently attend, and March 2, 2013 was the dedication of The Nathie Marbury ASL/Deaf Studies Collection at Austin Community College co-hosted by ACC and Gallaudet University Regional Center - Southwest. As a part of the dedication program, the Masters in Sign Language Teaching program is naming their annual academic achievement award after Dr. Nathie L. Marbury, '75, an ASL professor at Austin Community College. As you probably noticed in the video, the plaque is possibly the only plaque in the world to include ASL in its written form, including Nathie's name sign, which is a very important cultural artifact of our ASL community. The students who are selected on an annual basis for the award will have their name written in si5s. Clearly, this didn't just happen, but required the work of many to make this happen. First, I must thank Dr. Emily Anderson, chair of ASLIT department at Austin Community College who was able to garner unanimous support from all faculty including the signature of the president of Austin Community College in supporting Dr. Nathie Marbury's many achievements! Second, I want to thank the plaque designers - MA-DST alumni Robert Arnold Augustus for the written ASL portion, and MA-SLT alumni Justin Jackerson for putting everything together in a very short time. Third, I must thank Summer Crider Loeffler, MA-DST alumni and Gallaudet online faculty for producing the video. Finally, thank you all for your input and support for this naming process which has been going on for about a year now. The plaque will be hung in the ASL and Deaf Studies department in May prior to graduation. If you'd like to learn more about si5s, which was given birth in the ASL and Deaf Studies Department at Gallaudet University through a Masters Thesis completed by Robert Augustus, check out his link: www.si5s.org.
