INTO THE DESERT Our Lenten journey of forty days mirrors Jesus’ forty day fast in the desert, when he is tempted by the devil. Even though we know the temptations are lies, empty of meaning and distracting from our true purpose, we are nonetheless vulnerable. Like Adam and Eve in the garden, I am continually invited to choose my own will or to trust in the will of God. In the moment of temptation, the world shrinks, and what I want becomes far more important than what I truly need or what God wants for me. During this season of Lent, we slow things down a bit, take deeper breaths, and intentionally seek God’s will. This is what it means to persevere in faith. Let us journey with Jesus these forty days in the desert. Let us listen, with our hearts, to the voice of God, the Spirit of God within us. From that place of quiet and stillness, we can join Jesus in saying no to the temptations and saying yes to God’s love for us. The disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving can help us make the season of Lent a joyful walk in the light of life, rather than a fearful hike in the shadows of death. Staying connected to God’s Spirit and to each other is a rewarding preparation for the celebration of Easter when these forty days are done. God bless you. Saint Josephine Bakhita, you are with us.
