At the 2016 census, Humpty Doo had a population of 4,313 people. Its local government area is Litchfield Municipality. The town is a popular stopping point for tourists travelling between Darwin and Kakadu National Park, and boasts many attractions of its own. The main industries are agriculture and tourism; however, most residents commute to Darwin or Palmerston for work, and many regard it as a dormitory town. The name of the town has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. It first appeared in 1910 as Umpity Doo, and is of uncertain origin. The following derivations have been suggested: from the army slang term "umpty", used for the dash when reading Morse code from a colloquialism meaning "everything done wrong or upside down" from Umdidu, an Aboriginal name supposedly meaning "popular resting place" The Humpty Doo Hotel is well known and features in several bush ballads, including "The Man from Humpty Doo" by Ted Egan and "Humpty Doo Waltz" by Slim Dusty. It opened in 1971, survived Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and has since become a local icon. In addition to comfortable visitor accommodation, the hotel features a bar area with open walls, a concrete floor, and an iron roof. Local live music acts regularly perform here. The Big Boxing Crocodile in Humpty Doo Another tourist attraction is the Big Boxing Crocodile outside the United Petroleum station (formerly known as the Bush Shop) on the Arnhem Highway. This humorous attraction is a reference to the large crocodile population in the area and is one of the many famous "big things" found around Australia. Graeme Gow's Reptile World is also an attractive stop for tourists on their way to Kakadu, with a collection of at least 300 species of snake. Humpty Doo Tavern is a favourite stop for both locals and travellers on their way to Kakadu or visiting Fogg Dam, popular for bird watching. Mangrove Jack’s Bar provides air conditioned … ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE BIG BOXING CROCODILE As Humpty Doo has evolved into a commuter town for people who work in Darwin, the Big Boxing Croc has become a very identifiable icon. It stands 13 metres high, wears a pair of red boxing gloves, and was inspired by the "Boxing Kangaroo" logo used in Australia's successful 1983 bid for the America's Cup. At the time it was horrendously expensive. The crocodile was the brainchild of Marcel Britnal who was running the Humpty Doo Bush Shop. In 1987 he commissioned a Sydney company to build the Big Boxing Croc out of fibreglass. The challenge was to build something that was strong enough to stand the full savagery of tropical cyclones. This may explain why the big croc cost a staggering $137,000. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coolalinga Central is a new & modern shopping complex located on the Stuart Highway at Coolalinga.
