On a trip through the Baviaans with Kobus Kok from Guarri Safaris we stopped at the Poortjies stream to take in the tranquility of the setting and for SOMEONE in our party to enjoy a glass of crisp cold white wine... Whilst dipping her feet in the stream, Gena began giggling with delight as her toes became the target for hordes of tiny little fish. Upon closer inspection we saw that they were the endangered Red Finned Minnow. This World Heritage Site is home to many protected and threatened species. These minnows inhabit one of the last large rivers in the Cape Floristic Region, at the south-western tip of Africa, where native fish still swim free and untroubled, as they have done for millions and millions of years. A few hundred meters downstream there is a small waterfall, and below that there are no minnows, only introduced bass. Bass were brought here from the northern hemisphere a century ago to provide fishermen with a respectable quarry. Unfortunately predatory non-native fishes like bass and trout have invaded countless rivers and pose the single greatest threat to remaining indigenous fish populations in the Cape Floristic Region. All of the 12 species of redfin minnow, the most widespread group of freshwater fishes in the Cape Floristic Region, are endemic, and nine of these species face a serious risk of extinction. Redfin minnows evolved in the absence of large predatory fish and consequently have not developed adaptations necessary to cope with this new predatory threat. The Baviaans red finned minnows are protected in pockets of water formed by waterfalls and weirs - each group developing seperately like Darwin's Finches. http://www.baviaanskloofsafari.co.za CONTACT KOBUS KOK: 082 774 1805
