Traditional Japanese kimono gets remixed with kawaii, cyber, goth, and other subcultures on the streets of Tokyo. Kimono - which Japanese people have been wearing for over one thousand years - are Japan's most iconic fashion item. Japanese people still wear kimono on special occasions and holidays, but traditional kimono (except for summer yukata) are worn less now than they were several generations ago. In Japan today, other types of fashion may have replaced kimono as daily wear, but creative young Japanese people are finding ways to incorporate elements of the kimono into modern street styles. From gothic kimono to cyber/rave style, to kimono mixed with super kawaii accessories, to the adoption of the kimono by many in Japan's shironuri (white makeup) subculture, kimono remains a strong influence in the modern Japanese fashion scene. We love kimono and we wanted to share fifteen of the amazing kimono-inspired styles that we have seen on the streets of Harajuku over the last few years. Please enjoy these looks and let us know what you think of young people taking elements of kimono and remixing it with their own unique styles.
