Artis Wodehouse foot-pumps (i.e., pianolizes) James P. Johnson's 1926 piano roll, Make me a Pallet a Blues Foxtrot i(QRS 3626) on a restored upright player piano. The tune was attributed to Sheldon Brooks, but likely comes from anonymous African-American folk sources. The title "Make Me a Pallet on the Floor" refers to a bed made on the floor using quilts or other material needed by a person who has been forced to spend the night in a location away from their own bed at home. James P. Johnson's Make Me a Pallet on the Floor piano roll rendition is one of his most masterful piano roll performances. It features a perfect union of piano roll technology and the specific artistry of this great American stride pianist and composer, James P. Johnson. Johnson's stride piano rendition utilizes the full range of the modern piano, from deep bass notes, to brilliant treble filagree and at the core, mid-range sustained notes uniting the whole. It is notable for Johnson's inventive rhythmic displacements that temporarily suspend the foxtrot 4/4 dance meter and the jazz riffs and "shouting" breaks.. Wodehouse plays on a 60-inch tall 1910 upright built by Bush & Lane of Chicago and restored by Paul Manganaro. Bush & Lane player pianos are noted for a piano roll playback mechanism that allows the person foot-pumping (i.e., the pianolist) to add in real time many expressive small-scale temporal and dynamic inflections.
