In the case that your window opening is more than three inches deep, you will need to place the brackets so that the back of them are set 2 1/2 inches away from the back of the window opening. In the case that your window opening is less than 2 1/2 inches altogether, then you will need to place the back of the bracket 1 1/2 inches in front of the window. Install each bracket at the top of the windows frame by inserting and attaching one screw through the hole between the springs. Now you will need to hook the bracket to the front lip of each bracket, and rotate the headrail until it clicks into the bracket.
