Niger coup: Presidential takeover raises worries for region amid deepening instability

Niger's presidential guards held President Mohamed Bazoum inside his palace in the capital Niamey, in what the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) are calling a coup. It marks the ninth coup or attempted power grab in just over three years in West and Central Africa, a region that over the last decade had made strides to shed its reputation as a "coup belt," only for persistent insecurity and corruption to open the door to military leaders. The European Union (EU) already announced it's cut off financial support to Niger, while several West African Nations have also suspended ties, as international allies demand the immediate reinstatement of President Bazoum.
