Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve (BTR) is a beautiful forest made largely of sal trees and bamboo. Its a vast area measuring 1536 square kilometers and divided into three major zones, Tala, Maghdi and Kitauli. There are about 22 tigers in the park area open (105 square kilometers) to tourists. Overall it is estimated to have between 75-78 tigers. Our visit to Bandhavgarh was a fantastic experience. This is as close as you can get to wildlife or a wild animal. This experience was how we enountered the Mahaman Male. It was formidable in its size and walked like a mighty king. Very bold, measured it appeared had a mean, no-nonsense look. When we saw the tiger the excitement spred like a virus in the body! Only those who get close and view as a spy in the jungle can experience these encounters. And they are often over in a few seconds to a a few minutes. Maghdi Zone, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, India. Time: 7.10 AM Sun rise and morning rays were a spectacular scene It was as if the thick canopy of trees were letting in a divine light Felt like someone was ascending down to give us a divine glimpse In the next moment the weather turned cloudy and misty Unusually, there were no animals to be seen We could hear birds were chirping but not in sight It was like someone was watching us We kept moving With so much quietness and serenity, could a tiger be sighted? The question clogged our mind. The odds were stacked against us that day, we thought A chital was then heard calling from far away. We forged ahead Jeeps were moving in the other direction. Yet, we pursued guided by nature’s beckoning In a thicket ahead we saw Sambar. It let out a call We moved forward in front of a forbidden path This is part of the 80 per cent of Bandhavgarh forest were entry is restricted to rangers A deep core zone Despite nothing visible, our heart was pounding Then a sharp call from sambar deer. It was coming from another no-entry zone parallel to this one We rushed. No jeeps. No animals in sight. At that moment divinity presented itself to us And we unconditionally surrendered It was the mighty Mahaman Male tiger A seasoned male, he was doing his daily business of patrolling territory Father of Dotty’s and Pateeha’s cubs he often ventures to their territory Packed with muscles and a long body, the Mahaman male was magnificent This divine glimpse was all over in a flash He did not waste too much time on the road and soon retreated into deeper territory
