His life full of wars for independence of Turkish country and revolutions to raise the Turkish nation to level of modern civilization, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader in the Turkish War of Independence and Turkish Revolutions, and founder of Turkish Republic. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a great leader, who turned Türkiye into member of modern civilization, with all institutions. To build a mausoleum that would represent his eminence, and thoughts about principles, revolutions and modernization, emerged as a common idea of the Turkish nation, during the great sadness following the death of Atatürk. Atatürk died on November 10, 1938, at 09:05 a.m in Dolmabahçe Palace. Atatürk's body was transferred to Ankara on 20 November and was buried in his temporary tomb at the Ethnography Museum with a ceremony on 21 November. The body was taken from the grave in the Ethnography Museum and transferred to Anıtkabir with a state ceremony on November 10, 1953. As there was an observation station on the site before building Anıtkabir, the name of Anıttepe was formerly Rasattepe. There were barrows related to the Frig civilization, which lived in Anatolia in the 12th century B.C. on this hill. After the decision to build Anıtkabir to this hill, archeological studies were carried out and the barrows removed. As for the architectural project, a competition was held and (even though it was the middle of World War II), 49 proposals from Turkey, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and Czechoslovakia were submitted. In the end, the proposal from professor Emin Onat and assistant professor Orhan Arda was chosen for its representation of the national architectural style. Anıtkabir has an area of 75ha, 12ha of which belongs to the monument block while 63ha is covered by the Peace Park, which has 50,000 decorative trees and 104 types of bushes. The monument also has several statues and reliefs that express the history of the Turkish War of Independence, the Republic and the life of Atatürk. The monument block is composed of travertine and marble imported from various corners of the country. The Hall of Honor within the monument block is especially stunning, composed of cream-coloured marble from Çanakkale, red marble from Hatay and black marble from Adana. The burial chamber where Atatürk's body is located is exactly 7 meters below the symbolic sarcophagus inside the mausoleum building. The burial chamber was built in an octagonal shape in accordance with the Ottoman and Seljuk architecture. The octagon symbolizes eternity and immortality. In the yellow vase around the sarcophagus, there are lands brought from 81 provinces of Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Azerbaijan. The soldiers, who keep a watch of respect without moving in Anıtkabir and watch the changing of the guard with interest, are specially selected from among the volunteers from the training units of the Land, Navy and Air Forces.
